Have you noticed how many posts are from people moving here from California--or people who used to live in California? What is it with this California-NOVA connection?

Just curious--how many of us have lived in California, and why did you move to NOVA?

I'll start. I lived in Redondo Beach and Santa Barbara for 20+ years. Moved to NOVA in 2000 when my husband was promoted. His company was taking on more government work, and as a result moving employees here. BTW, I also lived here in the 70's and I have family here, so in some ways it was a homecoming.

We are here for a job. We tried desperately to stay in San Diego but unless you are a successful entrepreneur, or have familial money connections, there's no income. Plus, we would never afford a house there and here there is a chance. Here my DH has a job that has future income potential and is secure. I like it here but I love SD and be back there if I could.

Nope, didn't make it to NOVA until I was in my 20's.

(LOL, this used to be a long ramble about my life story and how I came to NOVA. But then I realized: who cares? So I edited it back down to the simple answer that was all the question required.)

I am from Southern CA. Spent my teen years in Mission Viejo (prior to that I lived in Massachusetts), started college at UC Davis, but was really unhappy there and transferred to Cal State Long Beach, which I LOVED! After college I married a US Marine, so we lived for several years in Oceanside.

We moved here to VA because my husband got stationed at Quantico.

My next-door neighbor was born and raised in Herndon, moved to California, and then just recently moved back here to Reston. It's unique seeing so many California license plates around town.

We are here because of my husband's job. The job market in his field was really bad in CA a few years back and we ended up moving here. Love it here but cannot wait to move back.

My wife and I live in Ventura, CA - and have been looking into relocating to NOVA. Reason? Everyone we know here in California (including ourselves) is either 1) Unemployed/Semi-employed; 2) Filing Chapter 7; or 3) Going through Foreclosure. It's awful. I do Administrative Support work, and it appears that with the federal government and government contract work - there are a lot more openings for what I do.

We're both very intimdated, as it is such a major change from life at the beach. I read some of the posts on this site, and get the impression that NOVA has good jobs, and is a scenic location - BUT, is also crime-ridden, unbelievably congested, has crummy weather in summer and winter, and a lot of snobby people. Both of us have visited NOVA, but that was on vacation. Can you guys help us - what's it really like? Thanks!
