Looks like we've got the team... but the deal with the Atlantic League may yet fall through. The Piedmont Environmental Council of Virginia is opposing the project, citing increases in traffic and potential impacts on area taxes and on local streams and wildlife. So the Board of Supervisors decided to have further review. The project comes up for consideration again on June 22.
So, what do you guys think? Are they going to approve it or not?
It seems to me that if they've already built the Nokes Interchange it's going to happen. But surprises have happened before.
Some details:
The Kincora project includes a 5,500-seat stadium near the intersection of routes 28 and 7. The stadium would be built amid a 314-acre office and retail development and would be completed by May 2011. It also has a performing arts center, a fire-rescue station, a nature preserve, hotels and a YMCA facility. In exchange for zoning changes, the developer will provide $70 million in road improvements, 200 acres of parks, and pedestrian crosswalks.
IMO, I think the project would actually improve the traffic situation, since it would involve building an alternative north-south route on the west side of 28. The street plan shows a gridwork that connects several smaller roads and expands Pacific Ave. so that it's a major road parallel to 28.
