Default Old Town, Alexandria Pubs

We are moving into Old Town and hope to locate and interview local pubs to find our new spot. Ideally we’d like to find something locally owned with a high percentage of regulars and a good blend of people. Are their any suggestions?

Also, I need to find a good sports bar to watch my Packers play on Sundays. Good food, good fans, good beers are preferred. Any thoughts?

I always liked Murphy's. It's always a mixed crowd when I go (usually to listen to the live Irish music), and you can tell that there are some regulars as they know all the songs and the singer.

As for football, you can try looking up an "official" Packers bar. Otherwise, you can try Bugsy's or Crystal City Sports Pub. I haven't been there to watch games, but I know people who like it. The rest of the sports bars I know of are in DC and have more of an Eagles/Steelers affiliation, so you probably wouldn't want to go there.

I second Bugsy's if you're looking for a sportsbar in Old Town. It's on King Street close to the river. It's not a very large place though so you need to get there early. There are alot of bars on that strip of King Street in Old Town. Murphy's is probably the best, but if you like karoake...you can do Rock It Grill and some others that I stop by from time to time are the Lizard which is a real hole in the wall but it has pool tables or somewhere like Hard Times. I'm sure there are many I'm missing.

I actually have nothing to contribute other than echoing juniper's post. Murphy's is my favorite pub in Old Town and it seems like they have quite a few regulars, and I haven't found a sports bar better than the Crystal City Sports Pub.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've checked out a couple of those recommended and enjoyed myself. I would really like to find a good IPA on draft somewhere. So far the best I've seen is Harpoon, which has nowhere near the bitter hops needed! What are the best beer bars around where I can find a great IPA and other non-major-macros?

Try Dogfish in Seven Corners. Granted, it's only Dogfish beer, but they have an interesting variety. In Alexandria you can also try Rustico in Del Ray. You're also not that far from RFD in Chinatown/Gallery Place. They usually have a good number of beers on tap. If you're in Old Town just hop on the yellow line at the Metro (and sober up a little on the way home) and it should take ~25 minutes.

I second juniperbleu's recommendations (although, unless there are two Rusticos, the people that live nearby will be surprised to find out they're in Del Ray and not North Old Town). At Dogfish, try the 120 Minute IPA. Other beer bars you might want to check out include the bar at Brasserie Beck and the Brickskeller. Both in DC and metro-accessible.

Oops, my mistake. I think I'm thinking of some cheese store in Del Ray they partnered up with to do cheese/beer tastings. I've actually never been to Rustico, but have heard great things.
