LOL that was true even way back when I was renting apartments. I remember a building on my street advertising "penthouse" apartments--some penthouse, the building was only 3 stories tall!

You can search craigslist by zipcode. That may help..We just had our Thomas Guide and asked as many questions as possible over email. Oh and prayed a lot.

Those apartment guides you can pick up at Metro are useless. I remember the first time I searched for an apartment in the area. My budget was $1100. Not enough for the places I was told was flooded with people just like me, fresh out of college -- e.g. the highrises in North Arlington. If only I could swing $1400!

Now, many years later, I can swing that $1400 and change...and I still can't afford those highrises. Because those same apartments are now $1800 and up for a one-bedroom.

A girl just can't get ahead.

(P.S. I have since acquired a dog, and a highrise would be impractical anyway. But the point is that I thought it would be much easier finding a place I love this time around because I have a higher budget, but truth is, rents have risen just as much if not more so than my salary.)

A Thomas Guide is a Rand McNally published, 100 page map of the area. Those apt guides you speak of are no good.

When the description says "clean and roomy" and you walk in and a cloud of cat pee hits you like a mack truck....people...cat pee....are you for real. It is one of the worst smells in the whole world. What are some people thinking? Frustrating!

add some rat droppings to really clinch the deal. Perhaps a condom in the trash can.
