Another VA tax question
As the times gets closer for hubby to put in for the job in DC I am trying to make sure we have all our bases covered so I am not taken by surprise. We are coming from another state that does state personal income taxes, when we do our taxes here it is all based on our federal return and during the year we claim the same exemptions on our state that we do on our federal. Does it work the same in VA? I have a feeling doing VA taxes is going to make my head hurt.

You use the Federal AGI (Adj Gross Income) as the basis from which to calculate your taxable state income.

VA taxes are easy once you get your federal form done. You even have until May 1!

One little quirk to note, perhaps. If you have long-term care insurance but can't deduct the premiums on your federal return because of the 7.5% floor, you CAN deduct them on your VA return. There is a line for it on the Additions/Subtractions form. If you do include the LTC premiums in your medical costs for federal Schedule-A, then you CAN"T deduct them separately on the VA form. It's sort of a one or the other deal.

VA does start with Federal AGI....looks like you might be filing a Part Year return - 760PY. Also, keep track of moving expenses to deduct on federal...if not reimbursed.
