Here's a list of recent train incidents, source wtop. Notice the many "texting while operating train" comments.

Such horrible news. I hope our regulars check in just to let us know everyone's ok. I know there are a few people here who use the red line regularly. Fern, are you ok?

This is one of those days I really appreciate living just a few miles from my job. The people trying to commute from Montgomery County must be facing a nightmare today.

My coworker said that her commute was fine from out there just a ten minute commute. Just talking about with her just made me so sad. Those poor people, those poor families.

The latest news I ssn on the investigation suggests that the 2nd train tried to brake and that the operator tried to engage the emergency brakes. If the automatic system had worked properly the train should have never gotten within 1200 ft or 1/4 mile. This may have failed and by the time the operator tried to manually brake she was either too close to stop or this also didn't work. So she hit the emergency brake. I wonder if train engineers say the same thing pilots say when they buy the farm.

I would hope that employers would try and be understanding as possible if they know of specific people trying to come from that area. Because even when you tack on extra time, things can still take way longer than predicted.
And yes, I read that the emergency brake had been hit but nobody on board said they felt any braking...maybe that failed too?? it was one of the oldest trains...
