I hope that everyone's friends and family are safe tonight. What a horrible accident.

Agreed. I'll be keeping the victims in my prayers. At least only two thus far (including one train operator) have been confirmed as fatalities. I realize that two is still two too many, but one need only look back to L.A. late last year to a crash that killed dozens. What a very tragic scene!

Sadly i think there will be more. It was the heart of rush hour which meant the trains were packed and those trains get up to 60 mph. The perfect recipe for a mass tragedy.
My prayers for those involved.

From what I have picked up. The first train had come to a stop awaiting clearance to go into the Fort Totten station. In other words, waiting for a train already in the station to leave. Fort Totten is a cross over station for the Green line and a lot of people go from the Red to the Green line there and vis versa. The second train apparently rear ended the first train. What I find tough to accept is why the operator either didn't get a warning message to stop (i.e there are signals on the Metrorail tracks) or didn't react to the sight of a train sitting motionless on the track ahead. Some of the witnesses on the second train seemed to say the train didn't break until the big jolt. The Red line is my train because I live in Gaithersburg and only a few weeks ago a train derailed near the cross over going into Friendship Heights.

If something malfunctioned it may have been too late to stop once the train was already in sight. But if there was no braking at all...that's pretty odd. Maybe the operator passed out or had a heart attack?

news now says 6 people killed. All my prayers are with the victims families and their loved ones. This is a horrible accident that should have never happened. Hopefully we will get to the bottom of this.
