It won't make any sense to the General Assembly either, so it won't happen. They would never approve such a thing.

ITA, that's one of the things that makes it so amusing. Fun to speculate about, but we all know there's not a chance this is going to happen.

Not with tax revenues at stake.

Ok, now I'm officially back to being terrified. From Fairfax's Idea to be a City Powerful Ammo for Road Funds:
"The change would require a countywide referendum and take at least two years to enact. The new city of Fairfax would have a population of more than 1 million, nearly double that of the District, and absorb the existing City of Fairfax, population 24,000."

Fairfax would be the lamest big city in the US with no true downtown, nightlife, cultural institutions, sports teams or major tourist destinations.

You, Alanboy, yada, yada, yada say this, and crickets chirp.
I, ScranBarre, say this, and I get cyber-shoes thrown at my head!
I concur with you though. Not even the current county administration knows what the true "downtown" of our county is. Through the "Transforming Tyson's" project they are identifying Tyson's Corner as the county's "downtown," but I'm sure people in Reston and several other areas would argue with that. A downtown has to be LIVABLE and LIKEABLE. Reston Town Center is almost at that stage. I work in Tyson's Corner, and I consider it to be an ARMPIT that I would be EMBARRASSED to point people to as a shining example of what we should strive for in Fairfax County!

First, I think the whole idea is ridiculous. But if it did happen, I imagine that Fairfax would be considered the downtown considering it has a true downtown along with the courthouse and such, plus it's pretty centrally located.

As a resident, I wouldn't object to it. I can see the ammo FOR the change due to the constant debacles in Richmond for road and transit funding.
Still, it most likely won't happen. Now ARLINGTON could better pull off the city deal, hell many people still think of it as a CITY as opposed to a COUNTY.
