News Channel 8 is the best for local news. And it's on 24 hours a day...

...with a few exceptions. There are a couple of paid programs--but they're for local businesses, and I personally find these programs very informative. Merrifield Garden Center has a great show on Saturday mornings at 8 a.m. They talk about local gardening concerns (and, of course, what they can sell you to deal with the situation). The host often talks about what he saw on his way to work that morning. For example, this week he's likely to say something like "I saw my first Japanese Beetle today, looks like it'll be bad in the following areas..."

1.) I watched Channel 8 this morning and was pleasantly surprised! They gained a PERMANENT viewer!

2.) I concur that there are too few FM stations for one of the nation's largest metropolitan areas. The selection is downright awful!

I have satelite so don't get channel 8 used to with Verizon. I don't know seems more of an extension of channel 7. I don't know I think the local news is just more balanced. Also I think it reflects the area. People here are less provincial than my hometown. People here care very deeply about what's going on in the world not just what their neighbor is doing. Back home the local news is a gossip page. People back home just don't really care about what's going on in the world whereas here people care about the world. This is the only place where I've witnessed on several if not numerous occasions total strangers getting into a political debate at a bar.

I saw a few local stories on ABC between 5 and 7 p.m.:

1. Marion Barry the Stalker
2. Child Abductor on the Loose in Manassas
3. P.G. County offering $20,000 to home buyers of foreclosures
4. Death of a local high school student football player

And those are just the ones I paid attention to.

I don't think News Channel 8 is that good. The local papers give better coverage of local issues than they do.

Well when you can't really afford a newspaper subscription Channel 8 will just have to do! Next year when I get my $10,000 salary bump I hope to subscribe to the Washington Post.

Give them a call. They will usually give new subscribers their first 12 weeks free.

I recommend the Washington City Paper. Even in these times of declining newspapers, this local institution continues to be a great local news reporting source. The print edition can be found (free) at various locations around the area. Online at Washington City Paper - D.C. Arts, News, and Events

Forget that. The Post, and other local papers, all have websites. Read them for free.
