I'll say whatever pops in my head, "Reagan", "National", "Reagan National", "DCA" - I use all those terms interchangeably. I've lived here my whole life but I understand that things change. Some ppl get their undies in a twist over things like this but in the end we all know what airport people are talking about, so I really don't care what term someone uses.

Sounds like BS to me. The real reason they want to change it back is because they hated Reagan when he was president and still despise his memory.

Lots of places go through a transition period during which people adjust to the name change.

Being a real old-timer, I still refer to it as National most of the time. However, if I am dealing with a really annoying liberal I will sometimes call it Reagan National just for kix ....

Wow, I brought this topic up at a family BBQ yesterday. I can't believe I'd never heard of this controversy before now. And I've lived here for years! But my husband's family lived here during that time, and they filled me in. So hats off to city-data for sparking a most interesting conversationat my family BBQ.

I'm used to saying National, but I think I'm going to start using DCA. That seems like the best choice.

ps. makes me wonder... if Fairfax County does become a city, will most people still call it Fairfax County? Or is that a different sort of a situation since it would be a change of government as well as a name change?

Upon opening in 1941, National Airport replaced nearby Hoover Airport....I wonder why they didn't keep the name? Herby was a good Republican! Well, there was that minor unpleasantness of the Great Depression, but nobody's perfect! So, I still call Reagan National.....Hoover, but nobody knows what I'm talking about.

I'm against naming public facilities after politicians....I hate them all. But, if you have one that's your all-time hero....rename YOURSELF after him/her. It's a very simple procedure....a trip to the courthouse and payment of a modest fee. Much, much cheaper than changing all those signs on buildings.

LOL, hey I like that. Think I might try calling it Hoover Airport every once in awhile myself, just for fun.

This still isn't as bad as the people in Chicago whining because they don't want to start calling the Sears Tower the "Willis Tower," recently renamed after the British firm that now occupies a good chunk of the building. People back in Metro Scranton, PA still call the Sno Mountain Ski Resort "Montage Mountain" even though it has been renamed for years now. Ditto calling PNC Field (home of the Scranton Yankees) "Lackawanna County Multi-Purpose Stadium" (what a mouthful that old name used to be!) People need to get with the times already! Nothing is static; things change!

Sears Tower is an exception because it's an American icon. That's like changing the name of that famous statue in NY to "The Statue of Freedom" and expecting everyone to go along with it.

I don't know about that. To me an office building is just an office building, and a name is just a name. If they decided to change the name of the anticipated "Freedom Tower" to the "Liberty Tower" or the "Resilience Tower," I personally wouldn't care. Willis isn't altering anything else architecturally or aesthetically about the building, besides the name change, so I don't understand why everyone is getting their panties in a bunch.
