OK, back to the subject. What else can we talk about regarding Front Royal? Well, there's always the interesting story of how it got the name.
The traditional legend is that a giant Royal Oak stood in the public square where Chester and Main Streets now join. It was there that the local militia were drilled. On one occasion, the drill sergeant became so exasperated by his troops failure to understand his commands that he hit upon a phrase they all could grasp. He shouted, "Front the Royal Oak!"
A spectator was very amused, and he and his friends got their kicks from telling this story over and over... until eventually Front Royal became a nickname for the town. When people got sick of hearing the town called "Helltown" they decided to make Front Royal the official name. It seemed a lot catchier than Lehewtown.

My roommate and I stopped in Front Royal for lunch at the awesomely cute Apartment 2G (the cheaper upstairs part of J's Gourmet) on the way home from a trip to Elkins, WV last year.
Unfortunately, the rest of downtown Front Royal wasn't so cute, to put it delicately. Historic, yes; cute, no. However, there was a pretty cool used/antiquarian book store ( Royal Oak Bookshop) with lots of VA history and Civil War resources, if you're into that. Royal Oak also, surprisingly, carried a small amount of Silver Spring glass artist Allan Jaworski's exquisite, very reasonably priced jewelry. I get compliments all the time on the ($12?) ring I purchased there (an opaque light pink glass square containing a smaller sort of luminescent silver-lavender square). I use it as a talisman of sorts to remind myself that there is beauty to be found in NoVA, after all.

Oops.. looks like the cheaper part of J's Gourmet is now called Elements; Apartment 2g at this point just refers to the much more expensive prix fixe part of the restaurant.

Front Royal is a fun place to visit...but that's about it. I have been telling people not to move there.

I know that earlier on some here wanted to make you a knuckle sandwich, but, seriously, I would make a real sandwich for you, if I could.

What kind of a "trap"? Are there no NO LEFT TURN signs posted? Or did you just decide the heck with it and turn anyway....and the mean policeman gave you a ticket?
I'm no prude when it comes to driving, but I'm amazed at all the people that break the law, get caught, and then rant about the cops. Just this afternoon I took my baby out for a spin. "Baby" is a 1967 Corvette coupe with the rare 427/435 six-pack motor...she's been in the family since new. I drive her less than 1000 miles a year.....mainly because I'm petrified that lawless drivers like you will run into her.
With 435 horses (rated back when horsepower was HORSEPOWER) under the hood....you know I have to whomp on it occasionally. But when I do, I KNOW that I'm breaking the law. If I ever get caught....it's not going to be the cops' fault...the fault will be entirely on me and my right foot!
