Aw, thanks! That's very nice of you.

We did enjoy living right along a run. Those photos were taken at our old rental house in Alexandria, which backed up to Holmes Run. We always had an amazing variety of wildlife in our backyard -- everything from hawks to foxes. There was one particularly bold little fox that would come over and nap on a stump in our backyard nearly every afternoon. And of course we had songbirds of every variety. It was wonderful!

The one thing we didn't like about the house's location was that, being so close to a run, our yard was almost entirely alluvial gravel (and I use "gravel" in the geological sense here -- I'm talking rounded river rocks ranging from 1" or so all the way up to fist-sized). There was a topsoil layer of about four inches on top of the gravel, but once you were through the soil, it was very difficult to dig holes for plants, and even more difficult to find plants that would put up with that environment. It sucked the fun right out of gardening.

We don't live there anymore, but our new house is within walking distance of a protected wetland. I keep meaning to go over there and explore. Maybe I'll take some pics!

Orangefish, I love your halloween owl. I have a really cool photo of a halloween spider that left a giant web over my bay window just in time for the trick or treaters one year. We left it up for a few days since it was the perfect halloween decoration.

Scran, spiders are your friends. They eat a lot of pesky, destructive insects. And the webs can be marvels of engineering. Sometimes they're so stunning I really hate to take them down.

All of which reminds me, I saw some bats the other night! Anyone have a bat photo? Some of my neighbors hate them, but I love it when the bats arrive. They keep our neighborhood mosquito-free.

We love the bats too. Almost every night we sit on our deck and watch the bats fly around. So cool.

I LOVE your owl picture. It's fabulous!

We had two deer fall asleep in our side yard last night. I've seen deer walking through the yard, but thist was the first time I've seen one take a snooze. They looked so beautiful against the fresh snow and the moonlight. I was tempted to take a photo, but was afraid the flash would scare them.

I know I'm supposed to chase deer from the garden but nothing's growing there right now anyway and everyone deserves a chance to sleep in peace.

Caladium, you seem to be in a time warp. You're responding to a bunch of posts from July and August.
