Hmmm, this brings up an intriguing question. One of the reasons they don't build a bridge crossing near Leesburg is that the area has civil war battlefields and a civil war cemetary. But is it still sacred, "untouchable" ground if you dig a tunnel beneath the graves? How deep does sacred ground go?

There is the Route 15 bridge reasonably close to Leesburg. Any bridge needs to be somewhere near Sterling or Herndon and connct to 370 or Shady Grove. I think Sam Eig Hwy (370) should connect to either 28 or the Fairfax County Pkwy. If rail, build a line connecting the Sillver line to Shady Grove, as previously mentioned.

Two problems: 1) Silver Line doesn't go past Ashburn. Extending it to Leesburg and then up Rt. 15 would be an enormous undertaking. 2) Route 15 is a historic (and thus protected) road. That's why they can't widen it or straighten it to make a better bridge. A metro line would definitely not be allowed.

I['m sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about a road bridge. My thoughts are a Metro line connecting from Dulles Airport to Shady Grove. Then where the Silver Line ends won't matter as you can get to that line from either direction.

I actually live in Staunton about 2.5 hours away but when I need a "big city" fix I head on up to D.C. like I did last Wednesday and very much enjoy riding the metro. I also make good use of commuter trains and subways while in New York. Since I did not grow up with a subway at my fingertips it still is a neat experience since I only get to D.C. once every few months or so.

The problem is there's quite a distance between Dulles and Shady Grove. And the area between the two stations has extremely pricey homes, protected historic sites, and the Potomac River. All of those things make such a project ridiculously expensive, especially when you consider the number of court challenges that would ensue. It wouldn't be worth it.
