I was just out looking at apartments in Arlington this weekend, and one of the leasing agents mentioned that the rental prices are at a high point right now since it is "peak" summer moving season...but she said that last year the prices dropped by about $100/mo for people moving in during the fall/winter season.

I'm on a month-to-month lease right now, so I can be patient if it is worthwhile. My question for the more experienced folks here is:
When is the best time of the year to get a deal on an apartment?
Also, I'm hoping to move by November 1--do you think that rent prices will dip by then?

Keeping in mind the limited data pool, I kept track of my apartments market rate over the past year so I would have more information in negotiating a new lease. The cheapest listing was in March. No idea if the general economy had anything to do with that. I would assume most people like to move when it isn't winter though, or in between school years, and college students are looking for apartments in late summer etc. driving up prices.

I would think the apartment prices would be most expensive right after college kids get out of school, and most expensive in August before school starts.

When we moved to VA (in 2007), we got a great deal in Sept/October, $400 cheaper than the regular rent (it was a privately owned 2BR condo).
We were told by our estate agent that end of fall/beginning of winter is usually the cheapest.

Based on my experience, I would think that yes, you'd probably get a nice deal if you wait a while.

Thanks all for the tips - I think I'm going to wait another month or two and see if any "rent specials" start to appear.

The rents may go up for 1 year lease in winter months.. if you can find someone to lease it out for shorter or longer.. u may get a deal.. coz think about it.. the apartment doesnt want u to move out next december coz u are done with the lease..

i'd say offer them u'll stay for 15 months till march and see if u reduce the rent?

I believe they are. There is a shortage of available apartments during the summer because of all of the temporary folks coming in (i.e., interns, fellows, summer workers) and students arrive in August, thus keeping the prices leveled.
