Questions Question: Gainesville or Fairfax County
Any tips will be really appreciated. We are almost sure we want to live in Gainesville, but I'm concerned about hubby's commute to DC. Great thing is we haven't signed a lease yet We have barely two months to decide. I know people in the forum have mentioned VRE from Manassas to DC.
On the other hand, I will have to go to Arlington once in a while (I telecommute), so I was wondering where in NOVA to live to be as close to DC as possible, maybe 30-45 minutes drive? We have two little ones (3 & 1), so we're looking for a family oriented surburb. We're looking to rent now till we settle. Is it realistic to find a 2 or 3 bedroom townhome in Fairfax or Burke for around $1800 in a great neighborhood.
Also, any tips on great preschools (full day)?

If you want a 45 minute drive to DC then Gainesville is not for you. At least not in rush hour traffic.

Gainesville would be a miserable commute into DC. Avoid it if you can.

Gainesville is far. It's a nice area and I can see why people live there and buy houses, the prices out there are relatively low. But if you're going to be renting anyway, you can get closer and not have that awful commute. You absolutely can get something in Burke or Fairfax in your price range.
Burke is great for families and has a VRE stop, too, which would be easy for your husband. But one catch is that if you work on the Orange Line corridor in Arlington, it's very hard to find convenient public transportation from Burke - everything goes to the Pentagon area. But it isn't the worst drive in the world - better than Gainesville.

Does anyone commute to DC for about 30-45 minutes (car or public transport)? If you do, which areas do you suggest?
