We just leased a house in Manassas and I am possibly going to be working in Fairfax. If I need to be at my job at 8 am, what time should I plan on leaving? Are there any "back roads" or alternate routes I could consider taking? Thanks!

Depends on where in Manassas and where in Fairfax. I sometimes use Clifton Road.

Without giving out exact addresses, near the new Harris Teeter (in the Hastings Place Shopping Center or something like that) in Manassas and near Calvary Memorial Gardens in Fairfax. Google maps says it's a 17.1-mile drive.

One of my friends used to work in Fairfax. He lived near Manassas. I think his commute took 45 minutes, but I am not sure. He took Interstate 66 both ways. You might want to leave at 6:30 AM. Hope this post helps you a little.

I live near you. There's no need to get on 66 to go to Braddock Road. When I Googled from my house, it gave me two main options, up 28 to Braddock, and Yates Ford Road (near Clifton Rd., but takes you out farther north on 123). I would be tempted to try Yates Ford Road. It's kind of a back road, but 28 is a mess in the mornings (thankfully, I commute within Manassas). I would start out leaving at 6:45, just to be safe, though I think you'll be fine to leave by 7:00. It's always easier to get there too early at the beginning and start leaving later than to be late on your first day.

Cool Manassas to Fairfax commute ideas

Take Yates Ford Rd from Buckhall
to Henderson Rd.
L on Henderson Rd. then L onto Clifton Rd.
take Clifton Rd to Popes Head Rd. just north of Clifton VA
and turn R onto Popes Head Rd.
Follow Popes Head Rd
to 123 Ox Rd. and turn L onto 123 N (Ox Rd.) toward George Mason Univ Campus
take 123 N into Fairfax

should be a good back way for you

-----------------------------------

Another alternative would be
Yates Ford Rd from Buckhall//Manassas
L on Henderson Rd.
R on Maple Branch Rd.
R on Clifton Rd.
L on Wolfe Run Shoals Rd.
R on Chapel Rd.
(at butts corner)
Turn L onto Ox road - Route 123 N
follow 123 N to Fairfax

----------------------------------------

follow along with Google Maps

Thank you so much for the ideas! I intend to do a "test drive" sometime this week and, although I hear traffic is lighter in August, I hope it will at least give me an idea of what to expect. Thanks again! And keep 'em coming if you have any more thoughts or ideas.

Do you live in the city of Manassas or PW county on the west side by 234 and 66? I lived off of 234 and 66 and I still said I lived in Manassas. I drove to Fairfax for almost 10 years up until 2 months ago, so I know the route. Let me know and I'll let you know what I think!

I did a trial drive earlier this week (leaving at 7 am) taking the "back way" through Clifton and Burke and it went fantastic. About 35-40 mins. Should I expect much of an increase in traffic on that route once school starts?
