Being fairly new here after moving from New England, I am wondering once VDOT and the state recovers from the Economic crisis the state is i, would there be any chances of US 15 being widened to 4 lanes from N of Leesburg to the Maryland line. Obviously it would be more difficult near the state line with the terrain there and perhaps a new bridge crossing would be possibly needed. It seems a lot of trucks, commerical trucks, and commuters from MD use this highway for work and it does get bottlenecked in spots at times. Is there some historical value to this road being the ole Carolina Road or is it more of a money issue right now?

I have heard it is historical and I have heard the landowners that would be affected have powerful friends in Richmond and they do not want the increase in traffic that a widening would bring. Also, if you notice, when you cross the Potomac route 15 is only one lane each way, Maryland would have to cooperate and there may be a reason they do not want to.

It's nearly impossible to have roads like that widened. It won't happen.

Not only will Route 15 not be widened - Hillsboro and Lucketts are both slated for "traffic calming." VDOT's FY10-FY15 road improvement plan includes design work for both projects, but the construction money was lost in budget cuts. They hope to find the money in a few years when the design work is complete. I don't know exactly what's involved, but given the new roundabouts on both the Maryland side and further south towards Gilbert's Corner, I would guess that might be what they have in mind.

Why would it be impossible to widen a road like that? Driven on it many times, the roughest part would be near the Potomac rvr.
But it doesnt seem like it is going to happen anyway.

Ahh thanks for the info. It figures a who you know would have a play in it as well.
I dont know how much the impact would be if MD kept their side one lane, at least there it is relatively flat and traffic can move there. Rt 15 merges to one lane when it rips off Rt 340 also and doesnt seem to back up too much if at all.

thanks for the repsonses everyone, good stuff

Locals from Luckettes have fought the widening of Rt15 for years (the compromise was the turn lanes added to ease traffic flow) They will fight tooth and nail to keep it a 2 lane road.

For years VA has tried to get another bridge over the potomac BUT... most of the land on the MD side is privately owned and the land owners will not grant the acess to the state etc to put in a road and a bridge.

That's what eminent domain is for. Maryland could grab that land in a heartbeat.

I agree that it will never happen....but that's not the reason.

Many people are concerned about the effect on the river and the river banks of another bridge. It has to be looked at carefully to make sure the Potomac river is protected.

There are plans for it to be expanded as well as many other roads around Leesburg. The southern bypass - Rt. 9 is in the Comprehensive Plan to be expanded from 4 lanes - 6 lanes. Just horrible. They should spend all available funds on expanding Route 7 from Leesburg to Tysons.

I don't understand this comment: Route 9 comes from WV through Hillsboro to Route 7 at Paeonian Springs and ends there. What will it be bypassing when it is expanded? Are you thinking of the route 15 bypass which is south of Leesburg?
