I took the family up to Hershey, PA and then to Gettysburg for like a two-day weekend. Would have LOVED to have stayed for three...

I know its a bit further out but what about NYC. 2 nights in Times Square or Central Park would be great for a quick getaway.

In no particular order:
New York City
Philadelphia
Harper's Ferry
Colonial Williamsburg
Outer Banks of North Carolina
Any one of several National/State Parks in the Shenandoah
Atlantic City
Niagara Falls (8 hour drive each way)
Any one of dozens of Civil War battlefields in Virginia
Richmond (Confederate White House, etc)
Gettysburg
Charlottesville
Just some ideas

Great list! And I would add in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania.

I agree ^^ If you're interested in NJ beaches, check out Cape May. You can either drive (go up to Wilmington, cross over the Del Mem bridge, and then head south until you can't anymore...if you're interested I could give you real directions), or drive to Lewes, DE and take the ferry over. It's a cute Victorian town with good restaurants, the beach, and several local wineries you can check out.
Also, my roommate and her boyfriend drove down to Charleston for a long weekend and liked it. I haven't been so can't recommend anything, but looked interesting.

You can get good airfares out of Baltimore. I went to Burlington, VT for $99.00 round trip on Airtran in June and we're going to Boston for a wedding over Labor Day weekend on Southwest. Southwest doesn't charge baggage fees so that's an even better deal. They don't participate in Travelocity, Expedia, etc. so go to southwest.com. Some of the same fares are available from Reagan National which is easier, especially if you take Metro, but if you can't get a good fare from there check Baltimore. So you don't necessarily need to limit yourself to places within driving distance.

I second the recommendation for Cape May. We've been going there every summer since I was 12. I like all of the other recommendations, too. It depends what you like and what you want to get out of the vacation - relaxation, sightseeing, cost, etc.
Other options might be:
-New Hope, PA (outside Philly)
-Berkeley Springs, WV
-Virginia Beach, VA
