I just got a job in Sterling. I currently live in Alexandria. I have to be in to work by 10:15. Will I hit traffic on 495 and 267 towards dulles if I leave by 9:00? Will it be enough time for me to arrive to work on time? Also, how is the commute from Sterling to Alexandria around 4 PM? Please help!! Thanks!

Be glad you have a reverse commute and have to be at work at an off-peak hour -- congrats, you just hit the Northern Virginia commuter jack pot! Also, have you considered taking Route 50 to the Fairfax County Parkway and on to Sterling? I would think your bosses would be pretty understanding the first few days as you work it out -- one would hope.

I'm actually relatively new to the area, so I'm still trying to figure out the quickest possible routes. Does Fairfax County Parkway have relatively less traffic than 495?

I commute from right across the bridge from you...Ft. Washington/National Harbor to Sterling. It takes me 50min on a great day to an hour normally. The only traffic I face the whole way typically is at the Braddock Rd. exit near all the construction that is going on which lasts until you get to Tysons....it is a parking lot during this stretch going less than 5 miles per hour. You will fly the rest of the way. I generally arrive between 9:45 and 10am and leave my house between 8:45am and 9am.

The morning shouldn't be bad on 495 or 267. The afternoon, it will probably slow up on the toll road getting onto 495, and be slow on 495 till at least 395. I think 495/267 will still be faster then other ways though. Definitely in the morning.

This from my experience commuting tysons to alexandria and tysons to reston.
