Default Luray caverns

My family would like to see Luray Caverns. Any suggestions for places to stay, eat, see, do in the area? Thanks!

I haven't been there for quite awhile but I enjoyed my visit. We stayed in Luray VA, and also spent time on the beautiful nearby Skyline Drive.

Several good canoe outiftters there (suggest kayaks since they are easier for people with no experience). One you can check the river level for online (Downriver Canoe). The George Washinton National Forest (no fee) and Shenandoah have nice hiking. There's a WalMart so you can stock up on food, etc. Small drive, but Fisher's Hill Battlefiled and a civil war museum. Several antique places in Woodstock (?) if you're into that also. Have a good time. We're renting there for Thanksgiving. Saw a bear near our place a couple of months ago. Fun place.

Luray Caverns is super expensive. Like $22 per adult. My hubby has never been so we did the trip and stayed overnight in a hotel up in Front Royal. While we had a good time, it was just a bit pricey.
One thing I liked about Luray - self guided tour for 1 hour, and headphones had a kiddie version of them telling you what each stop was about. made it fun for the kids.

Skyline caverns is a bit cheaper and there are coupons online for like $1 off each admission and not as far as luray. (you drive past it for another 30+ miles to luray)

My granddaughter is begging me to take her up to the mountains one weekend so we are going the weekend of the balloon festival. I found a hotel in Winchester with an indoor pool and an all you can eat buffet right there for dinner (golden corral) I hope they are as good as the one we hit going south last week to the beach!! Theres a childrens museum in Winchester we will check out, and then make our trip through Luray and skyline drive. Should be fun.

Places to stay - look up for winchester, which isnt too far from front royal, and see what you find. Cheaper than front royal and not that much further to drive to luray (16 miles I think) and I found one with an indoor pool.

Food: Pack a picnic, like someone else said there is a walmart there, go there and pick things up. The hotels usually have a microwave and fridge.

Things to do: We found several zoos there as well. One is just a mile or so from luray caverns, $ to get in, it is a rescue zoo Luray Zoo home page

There is another on the way towards winchester, cant remember name but when I find it will post.

There is dinosaurland Welcome to Dinosaur Land, located in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley!

and of course skyline drive is nice.
