Hello,

I need advice for a nice but inexpensive restaurant to take my mother for her birthday dinner. I would like to pay no more than $20 for an entree. She likes American, Chinese, Mexican, Southern and Cajun cuisines. Can anyone give me recommendations for the Northern Virginia or D.C.area? Thank you

Sorry. The metro accessible part takes me out of the equation.

Mike's American Grill in Springfield off Commerce Street is really good. It's mostly American food. You can get an entree under $20 if you don't get a steak. Chicken and Fish dishes are usually under $20 a plate. There's also a really good Chinese Buffet across the street called the Blue Pearl buffet. I think it's about $15/person for the buffet and it's great and a lot of fun. It's loud though, so no good if you're looking for a quieter atmosphere.

Bangkok 54 in Arlington. Great food/service/value. I would describe it as improved Chinese food. Fresher ingredients and far less grease/salt/msg. Mike's taste like the Sysco truck to me, and it is overpriced. They do pack 'em in.

You could try Union Street Public House in Old Town Alexandria. Most of the entrees are below $20 (the exceptions are cioppino, crab & lobster cakes, the larger of the filet mignon options, and a full rack of ribs).

Mike's in Springfield is part of Great American Restaurants, any of which would fit the bill.
RT's in Alexandria is good for cajun: .. :: RT's Restaurant :: ..
Southside in Old Town has reasonably-priced southern: :: SOUTHSIDE 815 - Restaurant and Sports Bar Alexandria Virginia (Va) ::

Mike's. An excellent choice. Not sure about it being near Metro though since I don't live there.

I'd recommend Meiwah for Chinese food at a fun restaurant and location: Meiwah ::|:: Restaurant ::|::

We go there a lot and love it. Their cuisine falls in between traditional chinese style and the PF Chang style, so less american than PF but not completely traditional. We usually go to the DC location (I think it's M-st and New Hampshire, but check their website), but they also have a location in Chevy Chase that includes great sushi as well; We've eaten at both and think they're great.

We've tried a ton of their dishes and liked almost all of them so far. I'm generally a meat person, but even their tofu dishes are tasty. The drinks are extremely fun as well, they're island style served in tiki glasses but be warned that they're quite strong! The staff has been nice to us every time, and most of their dishes are very reasonable at $10-15 or so. It's our "go-to" spot for dinner when we want to meet up with friends later at bars downtown.
