And the only way to figure that out is to talk/ask about it. Survive/live for a family of four is different than survive/live for a single person just out of college. The place I would choose to live as a single, newly married, or family man are all completely different.

Just to tell you how "un"helpful some can be I'll still bring up again the example that I was told I'm "slumming it" on $40k/year in Reston. That's entirely not the case, but then you'll have others reading that and ending up confused.
Maybe not, but if your parents are paying for your car this year, and you have no slack in your budget for travel, savings, or what have you, I'll upgrade your status to "getting by."

It's that nothing fruitful EVER comes from poking a sleeping bear, which is just what people do when they bring up the dreaded "cost-of-living" issue on this sub-forum because we apparently have a lot of affluent households on this sub-forum who tire of hearing of the lower-middle-class "whining."
Well, when it comes to living choices, this is the one time one can never have enough opinions to weigh.

I'm not sure what your beef is. Every (or most) people's situations are different, with different needs, wants, and considerations. It's really truly impossible to really understand the lay of the land until one has experienced it for him or herself. And as a result, the next best substitute is to ask the people who have been there.

I lived for 2 years with 3 roommates with rent of $500 a month in Fairfax within walking distance of the Vienna metro without working at all.

My only income was unemployment for 6 months + savings.

All told, in those 2 years I spent less than $15,000 total.

I never felt deprived.

I come from a poor upbringing though, so I don't expect to drive a BMW down to the country club for a game of golf or spend a ton of money eating out every meal of the day.

1. People in the D.C. area are jerks.

2. People in the D.C. area with money are disgustingly self interested yuppies that, despite voting Democrat, absolutely hate everyone that isn't rich and think they are better than you because of the car they drive and the house they live in.

It's not the "affluent" objecting to the "lower-middle class" whining, it's the mature (regardless of age) being annoyed by the narcissistic and immature (regardless of age) whining. Why does anyone older than about seven need to whine, especially to strangers on a message board?!
