Is this their not-so-subtle way of "proving" that they need rate increases?

No, they're just stupid. Doing something like this to save overtime costs might be fine but they can't just spring it on people on short notice like this. There are undoubtedly many people who went on their summer vacation last weekend and will be returning to the airport this weekend expecting to use the Metro to get home. Surprise, surprise ...

If you look at the tradeoff mentioned in the article, it seems like a good idea.

3 days of closure vs. 150 days of single-tracking.

I don't know how often you guys ride at night, but single-tracking is terrible, and 150 days of it would be intolerable. Much better to get it over with in 3 days. It's like ripping off a band-aid instead of doing it gradually.

So true! I think that this is definitely the lesser of two evils in this case.

I don't know... it's one thing to close the Crystal City and Pentagon City stops but closing the airport one for the entire holiday weekend is going to cause some issues with travelers!

that's true. The money will stay here locally, except going to some bank in Europe to pay for the equity Metro took out on the train cars.
