There's a Bloom right across the street from me in Lowes Island. Their meat is superior to the meat at Giant or Safeway, in my opinion and I like the self checkout when I only have a few items. I am not a big fish eater so I can't comment on the fish department. I do find the variety of staples does not compare to Safeway or Giant. Wegman's is great for prices and variety but I can't stand the crowds, I try to go there in off hours.

The Giant I go to has the scan as you go.

We've found Wegmans to be the cheapest grocery store for us. And it has the best variety, especially when it comes to meat and produce. We were looking for flank steak at Harris Teeter the other day because we didn't want to drive all the way to Wegmans - Harris Teeter's flank steak cost $23! For FLANK steak! We held off and pick up some at Wegmans for $14.
I agree about the prices at Giant. Wegmans seems to have the lowest prices, especially if you buy their store brand. Their store brand items are usually just as good or better than the name brand ones, especially cereal. Harris Teeter has great meat prices WHEN THEY'RE ON SPECIAL but otherwise cost a little bit more overall. I use Wegmans as my main store and HT for their sale items. I sometimes go to Bloom for their sale items as well. Bloom's prices aren't particularly low but don't seem to be any higher than the average.

They all have their +/- but I prefer Harris Teeter for the weekly $20 off $50 coupons, variety and cleanliness of the store.
How are you getting $20 off $50 coupons?

They send them in the mail every month. I've been using 1 coupon per week for the past 6 months. Last time I went to HT, I spent $57 and saved $63 with all my wife's coupons.

When the Harris Teeter opened in Manassas (it's actually the one closer to Woodbridge off Hoadley), they would send me the $10 off coupons that were good each week. I used them. Then I never got another thing from them again. I wonder what's up with that. I have a VIC card and everything.

The problem you have in Gainesville is within 1 square mile you have: 1 Bloom, 1 Harris Teeter, 2 Giants, 1 Shoppers, 1 Wegmans and a Safeway (being built). That is A LOT of grocery stores packed into a small area. The competition in Gainesville/Haymarket is FIERCE.

They do that as a promotion when a store opens. Once people are in the habit of shopping there, the promotions stop.

I don't think that's 100% true, because there's so much competition in the area when the promotions stop (20 off 50), most people quit shopping there.

Some of the Giant stores have the scan-as-you-go thing. Our Giant in Purcellville has it and so does the one I went to in Fairfax. I think it was Greenbriar Giant. It's nice for people who want to do the work themselves and those who don't want to have to speak to anyone, like a clerk and bagger. At Giant's prices, I let them to the work, scanning and bagging.
