I am fairly new to the area and living in Lorton. I have a dog and really don't know where to go to get him groomed ! I spoil him madly - so I'm willing to drive further to bring him to the best place. I want a place that's CAGELESS - where the dogs are not put in cages when they're waiting to be groomed. If anyone has any experience with loving, caring groomers who will treat my dog like he is their own, let me know!

Thank you so much

Default Petsmart

We recently got a dog and asked around. Most people recommended the local Petsmart off of Rt 50. Apparently the groomer has been there a while and you can watch as they groom the dogs through a large window. Can't beat the price either -- I think we paid $15.

Just from bad experiences in the past, I like to stay away from PetSmart for grooming. Great for shopping/daycare, though! Any other suggestions, dog owners??

Yeah, I'd avoid the big chains....you'll get a minmum wage person who may or may not care...

There are lots of mobile groomers operating around here. They do puppy in a large air-conditioned van right in front of your house. Our mobile groomer is based in Annandale and I don't know if she'll go to Lorton....I know she doesn't go to Centreville because I was going to refer a friend who lives out there.

Before that, I took pooches to Canine Carousel in Annandale....definitely no cages but you need an appointment. You can watch the whole thing through large windows.

The best groomer we have found to be is Dog-a-do in Herndon. They came highly recommended to us, after we had searched for a year to find a good groomer for our westies. They are always packed, and you need to make an appointment. All they do is dog grooming and it's a local small business owner that runs the store. She is always there grooming right along with her staff. We won't take our two girls anywhere else.

I would not recommend having your dog taken to petsmart, or any other major pet store chain to be groomed.

I've heard several good recommendations about Dog-a-do as well. We recently got a dog and are planning on taking her here. If you dont mind, what do they charge for a grooming session with your dog? We have a Chow Chow, so it might be more due to the mass of hair, but just as a ballpark I was wondering. Thanks!

As a counterpoint, we tried 5 places or so before we settled into our regular groomer. Turns out the best of the bunch was a specific groomer at the Petco (not petsmart, we didn't like that one) on route 50 in Greenbriar/Chantilly. She's been there for at least the 5 years we've been going there and is great. We usually need to make an appointment at least a three-4 weeks in advance.

For the original poster, this won't work as it is not cage free. Our boarding place is cage free, but not our groomer.
