Seems odd to just get in the ride of a complete stranger.

Yep. There's actually a generally accepted etiquette with sluggin'.

Etiquette and Rules of Slug Lines

Normally, it should be an easy ride but once in a while you'll get the random creep.

I did it for about a year and it was a very good experience. I was picking up riders and not getting in the car with a stranger. Basically, you end up with the same group of people everyday. I got to recognizing the ones in my line and they became familiar with me and my car.

Slug drivers also raid MetroBus stops if they need another body or two....usually I would decline, but if it was cold or raining, I'd hop in if they were going straight to the Pentagon.

I would NEVER pick up slugs though....the potential liability would scare me too much. If I really had to do it, I would increase the liabilty insurance limits I carry on my car to at least $3 million. Most standard auto policies provide MUCH less coverage. If 2-3 strangers are seriously injured in your car, the ensuing damage awards can easily exceed your coverage....you can then kiss your assets goodbye...
