Not to mention they bring in all those lyme disease carrying deer ticks! *shutter*

I'm sorry, I hate deer. Or at keast how they have become so overpopulated in suburban areas, what with their only predator being cars and all. I never use to feel this way, and I'm generally a liberal and an animal lover (human society volunteer). But deer?! They are as bad as rats!

We also live off South Lakes near the HS and recently there have been 3 visiting our backyard fairly regularly, mom and 2 babies. They don't stay long, just walk through for a bit and leave. But we see them quite a bit.

Ok, well, seems like at least SOUTH of Lake Thoreau there's plenty, but I'll have to confirm they also come north of it once we move. I know I've never seen them on Sunrise Valley although I think I've seen them very close to the bike path not far south of Sunrise Valley...

Actually they're everywhere in Reston. I had a very white-knuckled driving experience last week coming home up Hunter's Mill Road between Fairfax and Reston. I had my high beams on at all times, and I counted no less than ELEVEN deer in several different packs right along the berm of the road! Would it honestly kill Reston to invest in some streetlights---even one just every 1/10-mile?

Trust me, if you haven't seen them in Reston yet, wait until around November! I almost hit one in BROAD DAYLIGHT (3:30 on a weekday) on Sunrise Valley Drive coming out of the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride.

Rep points to you! Deer are just very large suburban rats that run into your car and wreck it. As awful as rats are, they don't kill drivers in nova every fall. Nor do they destroy gardens and vehicles.

Yup, Reston hates street lights. It doesn't give people the feel of the country that Robert Simon envisioned. Plus, the deer don't care about street lights. Just wait until the fall, when deer are in rut. They will be ALL over your car, and everything else.

PS, I don't think deer travel in packs. You're thinking of other kinds of wild life in Reston. Avoid those kinds on the weekends and after school.

There are definitely plenty of deer in Reston, as they are heavily represented there as well as everywhere else in NoVa with a place to hide and food/water sources. I don't live in Reston but have worked there, and have definitely seen some on the roadsides early in the morning. The best time to see them will be around dawn or dusk when they are commonly out feeding/mating and doing other deer stuff.

I saw on Fox News a report that Rock Creek had a Deer Population of 83 per sq mile and sustainable deer population for the area should be 23 per sq mile. Then they showed a home owner with an 8 point buck lounging under his living room window.
I lived in Kansas and I can't tell you the number of serious accidents/deaths from these BIG animals jumping in front of cars. The mediums sized ones will literally rip off your front end.
