75 miles outside of DC is a huge commute considering traffic, unless you plan to use public transportation??? Stafford and Prince William counties are options. They both have cities with VRE (rail line) accessibility and they're in the price range. Both also have cities with easy access to the interstate. I'm happy with the schools my kids go to, unfortunately I can't say whether they're good or not. Not because I don't know, but because our standards may differ.

Here are our details:
  • Married with 3 young children.
  • Originally from small town Michigan, but currently living in suburban Indianapolis.
  • Will be working in a territory that includes all of Virginia and Maryland (but am partial to Virginia since I attended UVA many years ago).
  • Since much of my business will be in the D.C. metro area, we would like to be within 75 miles of D.C.
  • Ideally would like a 4 BR, 2.5 BA house with a nice yard, but our budget is only about $320k.
  • Priorities: safe, very good schools, family friendly (and reasonable access to a major highway)
QUESTION: Where is the best place for us to live?

Default You Can't Go Wrong With Lake Ridge Virginia

In many of the other posts you can see traffic is the biggest obstacle. 75 miles here in Nothern Virginia can mean you miss very important time wth your family. My mom lives 50 miles South of me, and it's impossible to get to see here unless I go in the middle of the day.

Lake Ridge, Virgnia is 20 miles South of DC. It's a Planned Community that is more like a small town, with shopping, relatively easy commute to DC, services in every direction, community schools and hospitals nearby.
