PLEEEAASE tell me I am overlooking the obvious here and there are Italian Grocery Stores/bakeries that I just seem to not find when I do my searches.
I saw a previous poster from last winter who was looking for Italian bread and was referred to Wegmans and Panera.
To paraphrase my teenager: OMG!
Okay-as much as I love Wegmans-and come from Wegmans Upstate NY territory-they in no way compare to a real Italian store. We have these on many street corners-bread only places-Italian delis; cheese and sauce stores. Yikes..how can there be such an ethnic diversity without an Italian focus on food???
All kidding aside, I really am looking for something that sells their homemade mozzerella, raviolis, etc. Does anything like this exist here?
Any Italians willing to open a shop? My bet is you'd make a killing!

This place in Arlington (Lee Highway) usually gets good reviews although it may not have as extensive a selection as you're seeking.

The answer is most "no." Sorry, but this area has just never had much in the way of good Italian stores. WAYYY back in the 70s, I can at least say that we truly did have a few good Italian sandwich places but no more.

If you're up for the trek, you can go to A. Litteri's in NE DC. It's tucked among a bunch of food wholesalers and has good sandwiches, deli, cheese, and all kinds of stuff.

You're not overlooking the obvious. The Italian Store is your best bet in NoVA, although be prepared for chaos if you're there during peak hours.

Well as sad as I am to have you all confirm this, at least there are some good options you've all suggested. I will say that when I go back to NY, I will make a specific stop and grab some freshly made "stuff". And you are right, Stephen81, I think it must be the immigrants from years ago didn't come here. Boy do I miss 'em
