Does anyone have any experiences with a fencing company - good or bad or a recommendation?

We are plannning on a privacy fence and are amazed at how expensive it is - thousands of dollars.

Not one person has ever put up a fence? Does anyone on this board own a home?

Have you thought about doing it yourself (or have a family member/relative/friend help out)? A friend of mine put up a fence to their townhouse last spring, a guy who has no experience with home improvement projects at all. It took him a few weekends since he also built a deck with a sandbox but it turned out beautiful! It was also way less expensive than using a company. Now if you have a large yard and a lot of fence to put up, I understand if you don't want to do it yourself. In my understanding all the fencing companies are really expensive vs. DIY. Good luck!

It also depends on what type of fence you want, for what purpose. Previous owner of our house had dogs but we don't. We need to fix our fence very soon (20 years old) and we are thinking about just removing the fence and using some money on landscaping instead, or just a decorative-type fence (cheaper).

A couple of my neighbors used Long Fence - I basically just know because of the little "label" they put on the fences. We had large (multi-acre) lots, so it was either do a small area with a good fence for privacy, pets (thousands) or do a more open design on a larger area (same price)! We did nothing.

I also admired a couple of fences by a company starting with a "B" - I want to say "Buchelle" or "Bucknelle" but I know that's not quite right.

I always look for moonlighters. If you see a fence going up that looks good...approach the guys about a "side job". Might take a while longer, like several weekends, but you will save a lot.

This goes for about any trade...LOTS of moonlighters out there.

We interviewed Long Fence - they were the most professional and biggest but also the most expensive. I think we will go with a smaller, cheaper company we met with. We have large dogs so we need a very good fence -
I like the moonlighting idea though - have used it with movers and were very happy.

I also wonder if angie's list or Washington consumer checkbook would be helpful. (I am a member of angie's list, but for a different city now).
