I am already dreading winter here, especially with the projected weather forecast for the next 3 days. I can deal with the cold but the rain could make me batty.

While you're exploring, maybe you can make a mental list of a few favorite places to escape the rain and snow.

I personally like greenhouses. There are a few garden centers that have large greenhouses full of flowers throughout the winter--when the weather gets too dreary for me, that's where I head. Also, the National Botanic Gardens next to the Capital Bldg. in DC. It's huge and full of tropical plants and orchids. It never fails to cheer me up.

The Smithsonian museums and the Library of Congress are also great places on a rainy day.

I can tell you that besides the Air and Space Museums, The Nat'l Botanic Garden is great for hyper boys who have been stuck inside too long. My 4 yo, who is pretty hyper, loves it and we spend almost 2 hours there a visit. He also loves the Postal Museum next to Union Station.
I haven't been yet, maybe you have, but the Metro Moms Meetup visit the Building Museum a lot too.
