hi - my 8 yr old has been complaining that her feet hurt and I think she needs some "good" shoes, meaning, quality with some support. In CT we had some great shoe stores with big kids sections and the top brands...here I am not finding anything. I went to the Dulles Mall with no luck at all, Outlets have none of the brands I'm looking for. Any suggestions for a good shoe store in NoVA, the kind that actually fits your feet?

I'll travel as far as Tysons if I have to, but am located in Western Loudoun...thanks

I have had good luck at Nordstrom. Another good kids' shoe store is Bradshaw's in Arlington, but that's further than you wish to travel.

Next Step in the Brambleton Town Center is a "comfort" shoe store. The owner, Chris, is very knowledgeable. The only caveat is that I'm not sure how much children's inventory he has, but I know that he does have some brands.

I was very disappointed in Nordstrom today, I thought I'd be set if I went there. They had basically nothing. She's got HUGE feet so needs the big girls sizes and the selection was lacking. Keep the recommendations coming!

Well -- I've taken to buying shoes online and that seems to work. But if you need a proper measurement first, it makes things a little more complicated. (My kids have tough-to-fit feet AND they are a bit picky. Or maybe I should call my kids "selective" vs. picky. )

not working to buy online...I now have a collection of ill-fitting shoes that I bought and can't return, so I really want to take her somewhere to be properly fitted. I have terrible feet and I don't want her going down the same path I'm on, which is pain with every step.

They have a Stride Rite in Tysons Corner Mall. They carry shoes for older girls (age 5 and up) according to Stride Rite's main web site. You may want to look on the web site and see what shoes are available and sizes. Stride Rite carries good quality shoes and offer some styles in wider widths if needed. I always bought my daughter shoes their when she was a toddler and while in elementary school because she was hard to fit because of needing a wider width. That was many years ago - she's in college now!

Try Wilkins Shoes in downtown Winchester. Big kids selection and they actually fit them. They carry Stride Rite. http://www.wilkinsshoe.com/featuredBrands.html

There's a Stride Rite at DTC mall too. It's across from the kids playground.

Online shoe ordering has gotten much easier and hassle-free in the last few years. I wouldn't rule it out completely, especially since
(a) return shipping is free and easy (literally just drop the box off at the local UPS store)
(b) several stores give you plenty of time to return it (up to a year), and
(c) you can order pairs in different sizes and send back the one(s) that don't work.

I have "selective" feet too, and I have better luck online than in brick-and mortars. Just in case you reconsider, you might find styles or brands you like at:

Piperlime - http://piperlime.gap.com

Endless - http://www.endless.com

Shoes - Shop Women's Shoes, Men's Shoes and Kids' Shoes | Shoes.com

Zappos - Shoes, Clothing | Zappos.com Free Shipping

I'm sure there are more sites out there, but these are the reputable established ones that immediately came to mind. At the very least, once you get her fitted properly, you could keep your eye on these sites to score more pairs from that brand when they go on sale.
