Most kids get alcohol from a 21+ friend or relative. Trying to make sure everyone gets carded at the point of purchase is a waste of police resources. It's simply not going to make a difference.

Most kids get alcohol that way because they know chances are VERY good they'll get carded! But that doesn't mean there are not plenty of kids who still try to fly under the radar at the register. Enforcing carding does make a difference.

If someone carded me I would tip him

No way a cashier in Giant makes $15/hour. HOWEVER we as tax payers just paid a lot of money for that one person to "get caught serving a minor, or whatever" and to have him fired. We paid for the police for their time for that escapade. of course no one mentions, maybe the cashier was in a hurry and forgot to card the person. There are always 2 sides to every story.

No one wants drunk drivers, but this is not going to stop kids from getting booze if they want it. IMHO the police would spend their time & my tax $ a little more wisely & catch the drunk drivers, drug dealers, burglers & muggers instead of causing some clerk in Giant to lose his job.

I've never known any store to lose their license for this. Every Giant and 7-11 still sells beer and wine.

Part of her job description is to ask for and verify ID when selling alcohol...she also gets paid to do this...so WHY shouldn't she be held accountable for not performing a job she is being paid to do? She is also breaking the law!

It's not about accountability, it's about the punishment fitting the crime.

I'd be all about firing someone if their negligence actually hurt someone else, but a 20 year old getting alcohol is hardly the end of the world. It is, in 99% of cases, a victim-less crime.

It is against the law to sell alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 so it is most certainly about being held accountable both legally and in the workplace.

Until the law changes drinking alcohol when under age, buying alcohol when underage and selling alcohol to someone who is underage is a crime in the state of Virginia.

Approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die every year as a result of under age drinking in this country. That's just the worst of it. Check out the facts of this "victim-less crime."

If it doesn't ruin this person's life, at least they will have a hard time finding work in their line of work. It just has to be difficult to keep up with "carding" with the volume that these folks have. The store should be fined instead.

Alcohol Sting/Shoulder Tap*- Fairfax County, Virginia
Totally disagree with you. Cashiers do NOT get paid that much. If they did, I'd work there in a heartbeat! If the cashier did their job correctly and CARDED the person, they should still keep their job. If they give them alcohol without asking for ID, they deserve to be fired. Betcha they won't do THAT again!

This poor young cashier at Trader Joe's got nailed in one of these Police State operations a year or two ago. Part of his "punishment" was that he had to card everyone; I was rather surprised that he asked me since this normally doesn't happen at TJs. At least he didn't lose his job.

In these stings the police are known to use "freaks of nature" like balding or greying 20 year olds and/or they will sport a heavy beard to make them look older. Thus it is clear entrapment.
