Here in NM I play quite a bit of poker (limit, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8). Is there anywhere to play cards in NoVa?

There are bars that have the occasional tournament, but until the surrounding states have table games, a 4 hour trip to AC is your best option.

There are many good legal and safe home games in the NoVa area. I play quite often. You'll find No Limit (usually 1/2 and rarely 2/5) is more common than Limit Hold'Em poker.

You can find games on Meetup.com, also. What part of NoVa are you going to be in? Are you coming here for a trip, or moving? If moving, you may be in for some luck next year. The folks in Jefferson County, WV (about 45 minutes to an hour from here are voting again on table games (including poker) on Dec 5th, and it is very likely to pass this time. That means we will have a casino poker room close by next spring.

Thanks, RedKnight. So home games are legal (and safe)? I'm moving to Herndon next month, so I'll definitely check out meetup.com. I like no limit but don't care for the swings although at 1/2 I'd play especially if the buy were capped. What about NL tournaments? Do the home games ever host tournys?

Really? When I checked a few months ago, it seemed like most games were just advertisements for bar leagues. I didn't find any good poker home games.

There is the Poker Palace in Portsmouth, about 3 hours away. It runs no limit games as a charity function, with an $8 time charge every 30 minutes, no matter what stakes the game is. At $1/2, this is unbeatable in the long term and you have to go in knowing you're playing for charity, not for money. There is also Victory Poker in Portsmouth, which charges slightly less, I believe.

If you want live cash games in NoVa, either try Meetup.com, or hit a few of the pub poker nights and meet the other players, who often have home cash games. Once you're "in the network" so to speak, you'll have no trouble finding a game.

I went to Ned Devines on Tuesday night to pass some time but the game never happened. They were supposed to host a free tournament with the winner getting a $40 gift certificate. I guess people just aren't interested...
