Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights is next Saturday, December 4. This is a parade of about 50 brightly lit boats that are decorated in a holiday spirit, as well as the District's fireboat, which spouts water 70 feet into the air.

The parade is 5-7 p.m. Before the parade, Santa arrives via boat at 4:15 to visit with children dockside at the gazebo and will be available for photos. Inside the Torpedo Factory Art Center, many artists will hold special holiday shows with gift items.

We're considering taking the metro to this. It's about a ten block walk, right? Does it seem like a safe enough neighborhood to do this (we would be coming home from the parade after dark, but not late at night). I don't want to count on catching the trolley, since every time I've gone to King Street the trolley never seems to show up unless we wait a long time, or has some other problem.

The neighborhood is perfectly safe to walk along. King Street is a major road--stick to that and you'll be fine. It is a decent walk though--1.2 miles from the metro to Torpedo Factory. Not a big deal for adults in decent weather, but if you're dragging kiddos in the cold it might be a bit much.

It's about 17 blocks between Metro & the riverfront. You can always start walking and catch the trolley as it comes along.

Does anybody know how far south the boats go? Can I see them from Belle Haven Marina area?

From what I recall, I believe they circle back around near the Wilson bridge.

How is the parking for the parade? Will the public garages get completely full if I show up by 3pm?

Thanks,
K

That's always an "iffy" question - depends on temps., etc. - garages were full last Fri. night for the tree lighting/shopping, we had to park in a Colonial garage as I worked that day and didn't get to Alex. until nearer to dinnertime (they have higher fee garages and be forewarned, all automatic so you need a credit card to get out).

What a perfect night for this! It was a little chilly, but not too cold. The sky was so clear that the lights really sparkled.
