I have accepted a position in the Chantilly area and I am going to be relocating here in the next month and a half. I am curious about the commute time from Manassas to Chantilly at about 6am m-thu and then back home around 3:30pm.

Do you have to be there at 6am or are you leaving at 6am? Also, what part of Manassas will you be coming from?

That commute is worse at 7 am than 6 and returning at 3:30 won't be as bad either on Rt 28. I work in Chantilly with plenty of people who commute from Manassas. Where in Manassas are you looking? Manassas is a very diverse town and housing and neighborhoods vary a lot. There are parts of Manassas I wouldn't live in and others are just not as easy to get to.

28 is a rat race and the traffic is especially bad commuting north from Manassas. You might want to try Haymarket or western Fairfax County. Ashburn is also a great commute to Chantilly.

At 6 am it isn't that bad. And the commute from Ashburn isn't exactly wonderful. I do it and if I leave my house later than 7, it takes me 40 minutes to go the 10 miles. The Greenway is a waste of money and at 7 am it's backed up from 28,sometimes almost to the toll booth and there are idiots who think they're entitled to go around everyone and slow down the merge. Rt 50 is out in the morning as it crawls from South Riding all the way to Lee Rd. Rt 50 in the pm is usually no problem. So, I usually go Loudoun Pkwy to Waxpool to merge on 28 and then come to a screeching halt before Old Ox due to traffic merging on at the toll road. The design for the merge of 28, Greenway and exit onto the Toll Road is horrible.

The commute from South Riding would not be any better than Manassas or Ashburn. The slowest and longest part of the commute to Chantilly is the last 4-5 miles.
