Hi, we're looking at houses in the west Falls Church metro and N. Arlington areas. No kids at home, so schools aren't a concern except from the standpoint of home resale value. Aside from the obvious differences (such as shorter commute from Arlington, housing costs), what would you say are the major advantages and disadvantages? For example, if you live in Fairfax, would you say the services are bad/fair/good/excellent? Are recreational facilities, well-tended, and safe? Are neighborhoods friendly? Thanks.

I think Arlington has less of a budget crisis than Fairfax County has at the moment.

We lived in both, for about a dozen years each. Aside for the obvious difference that Fairfax is much bigger than Arlington, and therefore has more recreational facilities, libraries, etc. the biggest non-school difference we noticed was that Fairfax seems more politically/socially diverse than Arlington, which is sometimes self-consciously politically correct.

If you live in Arlington, you can use the Fairfax rec centers, such as Spring Hill, but will pay a slightly higher non-resident fee. You can also get a library card for either jurisdiction, no matter where you live.

Otherwise, there are really more similarities than differences. You can safely allow your home choice to be dictated by location and budget.
