After reading that tread on 66, I don't think it'll be the winner. My DH is heading near the itersection of 66 and 495 (eastern Fairfax city). We're looking at living either west of there on the far edge of Fairfax city, or down south in West Springfield. Both houses are about 8 miles away from his office - but I think the commute from 66 would take longer?

Being closer in and commuting laterally is almost always better than fighting your way in and out of town. I would recommend the West Springfield/Burke area more than somewhere out I-66.

It all depends. Also, there might be some back roads to your DH's office. some of these get full too --again, it all just depends where you're looking at.

When you say "better", do you mean "less likely to make me lose my mind"? Then it's a toss-up

Which way are you going on 66? I commute from Alexandria to Reston and find the morning commute on 66 West to be much more bearable than the 495W/N commute. In the afternoon though, they both suck and I tend to use alternative roads heading home.

Going with traffic in the mornings - leaving around 6:30 or 7am. The job is actually on hwy 50 (I think that's it) - but I've heard really bad things about 50 as well. Seems like there are more alt. routes coming from burke/ springfield vs. coming in from clifton or east fairfax city. 5 friends have been transferred in the last year, and most have settled somewhere near 66, either on the north or south side. Only one couple had lived in NOVA previously (born and raised) - they went for Springfield - which tells me something!

Choose your poison. I live in Fairfax City and take surface roads everywhere most of the time. This works well. The disadvantage with heading east in the a.m. is the sun's in your eyes. I don't think 50 is bad at 6:30/7:00 a.m. I go west on 50 a couple hours later; traffic backs up coming east into Fairfax City. Can't imagine the stress of 66 east every morning.

West Springfield. For me, 'better' means more alternate routes if there is a stau or something.
