I'm familiar with many of the trails mentioned by others (e.g., Burke Lake, Accotink Lake), but in my opinion the towpath is in the best shape. It's long, straight, smooth, and most consistently free of heavy gravel, tree roots, ruts, and other obstacles. I'm curious: is your marathon on a hard surface, and, if so, how will you overcome that impact on your legs?

This was an old post. I completed the SunTrust marathon all the way back in March. The training went well up until two weeks before the race when one of my shins became incredibly sore. Still ran the marathon but ended up walking huge chunks of it starting at mile 18 due to leg cramps. Was hoping to break 3 hours but ended up at 3:18. My legs haven't been quite the same since. Hoping to get back in shape and post a more respectable time in next years Marine Corp.

Just wanted to wish you and everyone else the best of luck in the Marine Corps marathon this weeked. Looks like you'll have perfect weather for it, and the trees will be at peak.

Is that this weekend? Wow, time flies! Yes, good luck to all of you. Anyone here running in it this year?
