I am relocating to the DC area from Richmond, Virginia and am looking for advice on where to live. I am female, professional, 37, never married, no kids. I am considering Arlington and Alexandria. I fully understand I will have a completely different quality of life in the DC area with regards to traffic and cost of living. One of the main reasons I am moving to the area is to position myself around more single and professional men my age than exist in Richmond – slim pickings down there.

I am willing to spend up to $1,800 a month for an apartment (planning to rent before buying). I want to be within walking distance of a metro stop but may need my car for commuting to client sites.

Am I considering the right areas? Which neighborhoods best fit my demographic? Is there anything else I should consider

Thanks in advance for sharing your insights!

Old Town would be the spot. Very nice and a little older than Arlington. Although I know folks in their 20s that love Old Town too but yeah Arlington particularly areas like Clarendon have a younger crowd.

I would look no further than the Carlyle section of Alexandria. It's easy walking distance to 2 Metros and the "scene" in Alexandria is a lot more mature than the recent college grad paradise known as Arlington.

Welcome fellow Richmonder to Nova! I am a transplant to the area originally from Richmond as well (minus my 2 years in Roanoke). Nova will definatly take some getting use to with regards to COL and traffic but you do get paid more here to help offset those higher rent costs. One aspect that drew me to this area was its closeness to Richmond where most of my family live, its super easy to go home on your day off it need be and return later on (as long as you leave sort of late!) Anyway I am still getting aquainted to the area myself. If you have any questions from a Richmonders prespective please feel free to Private message me! Good Luck with your move.. I hope it ends up being for the best!!!!!

Being over 30 go with Alexandria. N Arlington is for young money, Old Town has that seasoned money.

You may also want to consider parts of DC, such as Dupont if you like the city life, or Tenleytown if you prefer a bit more quiet.

Thanks for all your advice. I'm headed to Alexandria on the Metro tonight to check things out. At this point, I am torn between Alexandria and living in the District.

What are the things to consider about the District? Places that have been suggested include: Dupont, Tenleytown, Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights. For driving, being close to Rockcreek Parkway has been suggested.

I appreciate all the advice you want to share!

If you like something funky, there are some small apartment buildings on Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray (North Alexandria). For something more high-rise with a straight shot into DC you might want to think about Crystal City.
