Not sure where you live, but they seem to also accept membership if you go to school in Fairfax/PWC/NVCC etc.

I don't live there yet! I'm coming in the beginning of September.
I will go to school, but will have to wait until spring semester.

Here is a link that helps you figure out if you are eligible to join a credit union. My husband had a relative in the military. He joined Navy Federal Credit Union off that relative who belonged. Then I joined. Then my parents joined. Then my sister and her family joined. Then my brother and his family joined - all because my husband had a relative in the military who joined.

We bank locally w/BB&T just "because" - initially was w/First Virginia and they were bought out. I don't have any major issues w/BB&T, drive-through hrs. stink - they don't start until 9:00 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m., First Va. was 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. as I recall - the whole point of a drive-through in my mind is to make like easier enroute to/from work and their hours suck.

I moved to NOVA in 2006 and since then banking with PNC. Their ATM reimbursement is simply awesome.

Recently I opened an account with Apple Federal Credit Union to get a new car auto loan. I got very good interest rate of 3.74%(60 months) and also refinanced my earlier auto loan at 2.74% (36 months). I'm not very impressed with their customer service but their auto loan rates are unbeatable right now.
