Default Speeding on 66?

I need locals' insights. Sometimes I take 66 from DC to 81 (Front Royal area). I always try to stay under 70 when the limit is 65, and 58-59 in 55.

The question is... do cops often patrol 66? If so, do they pull you over for 70 in a 65? Or is it more of a 75? What would you say a good, comfortable speed is that is over 65, but most likely won't get me pulled over? Also with 55 - is 60 acceptable? I see people blowing past me as I do 58 like I'm sitting still or something...but I do see police pulling some people over from time to time.

I tend to go nights, not days...that may make a difference.

Thanks!

Andrew

I've never noticed a large police presence on I-66 after you're out of the close-in part....but be sure to keep it under 80 mph.

All we need is ANOTHER reckless driving thread on here....

Car54, can you clarify what you meant by the close-in part?

I think you're safe at the speeds you posted Andy, I have never seen them pull anyone over for 5 miles or so over.

Car54 you are correct, the idiots that keep posting whining about getting a Reckless and they were 20 or more over is getting old.

As a police officer who formerly worked on I 66 you can safely do 10 over with little worry about officers. But, you never know when one will decide otherwise. One place I always warn friends and family is one mile on 66 approaching RT 15 from either direction. Haymarket PD work radar here and they write everyone. Why they don't stay in town in beyond me. 66 has a short section in the town but they have no business being up there. If I was a town resident I'd be upset that they are not staying in town.
That said, 10 over is usually fine as long as you're not tailgating or doing something else dumb.

You can be doing 70mph on I-66 with little fear of getting pulled over and will still have people blowing by you. If it's late and the roads are clear I set cruise at 69 and I've never had an issue (knock on wood). Honestly, if you get pulled over for doing anything under 70 you were just unlucky.
