Well, moving from HI even as a military family you won't have the sticker shock that a lot of people relocating here complain about. Vienna is a great area and is convenient to a diversity of activities and depending where in Vienna you are, within walking distance to restaurants and shopping.

The W&OD trail runs well past Herndon, out through Louduun County (From Shirlington to Purcelville). It's 45 miles long and 100 ft wide. It's a little hilly in spots and runs through both rural and urban areas, past small stores, restaurants, and larger shopping areas.

Do note the actual Town of Vienna is relatively small. much of the county surrounding the town uses the name Vienna in the mailing address. So you may be in "Vienna" and not be in the town itself. Not much difference. There are three high schools serving the area: Madison most of the town, also Marshall and Oakton. All three are good but very different.

I lived in Vienna for 14 years and still miss it! It's a wonderful place to live. The schools there are excellent and there are lots of things to do, places to eat, etc.

If you do choose to live in Vienna, try to live outside the Town of Vienna proper. If you live in the town, you will pay not only Vienna taxes but also Fairfax County taxes.

Good luck with your move!

The problem of Faux Vienna versus actual Vienna is nothing like that of Faux Falls Church versus actual Falls Church. For one thing, actual Vienna is about two-and-a-half times larger than actual Falls Church. And there are fewer (if any) areas that go by Vienna that aren't as nice as Vienna.

It is quite true that since it's a town, if you live inside the town limits, you'll pay town taxes in addition to county taxes, and if you live outside the town limits, you won't. But on the outside, you may have to look forward to paying out of pocket for trash collection, leaf collection, junk removal, or a water hookup. Also, don't expect your street to be plowed when it snows. Inside the town, all that is taken care of for free, so it's the old story -- you get what you pay for, and you'll pay for it one way or another...
