I recently moved to Reston and I'm looking for a place to drop off small quanitites of unwanted items. The Salvation Army in Herndon (I think) doesn't accept donations. I'm just having a ridiculous time finding a place to take my stuff and I refuse to just throw it all in a dumpster (which is what my husband insists on doing).

You may want to try Reston Interfaith along North Shore Drive near Lake Anne. I helped recently to transport donated food items between my church and this location, and they seemed to greatly appreciate all of our donations. I'm sure they'd like other non-food items as well. They seemed to be a very busy place; the "Great Recession" has created lots of economic need, even here in our relatively affluent town.

This organization accepts donations and is very close to Reston in my opinion.

Hope this helps!

You could post an ad in the free section of Craigslist. Usually stuff will get picked up quickly if it isn't junk.

craigslist: washington, DC classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

You can donate it to the Lupus Foundation. You schedule a pickup online, and they'll leave you a tax receipt when they pick up your stuff.

Default Second hand stores

There's a Goodwill in Sterling (closer to Herndon than Ashburn) at 22405 Enterprise Street. They take donations at the back of the store. It's in a shopping center.

There are also a bunch of Goodwill drop boxes around. I'm pretty sure I saw one in the Wiehle Park & Ride back by where the buses pick you up. I'm sure there are many others around if you keep your eye out.

I saw someone posted about Lupus--I was going to say that at least twice a month we get something from Lupus and one of the Veterans groups asking for donations. I think Value Village is one too, and we just bag it up, leave it outside our front door, and they come get it.
