Is there a local farm where I can buy a fresh turkey?
or maybe a store you can think of?

Thanks.

Does it have to be Fairfax County? I know a few places in Loudoun if it helps.

I think these guys on Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria can hook you up with a free range one raised locally:

Here's a map/listing from the Washington Post, tho I don't know when it was published.

Map: Where to buy fresh local turkeys - washingtonpost.com

And this was published last year -- while some of the Virginia farms may be quite a drive, last year they did deliveries at the local farmers markets. But those are costly birds! I think one of my co-workers went out to Middleburg for her bird (she wanted organic, pain-free killing, etc.) -- she was pleased, but I think she never told her husband how much it cost!

Most of the grocery stores in the area offer fresh turkeys instead of frozen.

When we lived in the midwest, we had a turkey farm nearby and bought a fresh one every year.. we loved them!! Since moving here, I purchased one from a farm in MD about 2 years ago and it was a bit disappointing.. I have also gotten a fresh one from Whole foods which was very good. Not sure why the farm bird was not as successful (could have been the cooks fault ) but the whole family agreed it was not worth the hike to MD again. I am trying to remember how they compared in price (the farm and whole foods) but think they were both about $3.50 a lb. I think we will try the butcher in Del Ray this years and see how that goes..

We bought one from Whole Foods in Springfield last year and it was the best turkey we've had so far!

I'm pretty sure I saw them for sale at Wegmans last year. Probably cheaper than whole foods, if I had to bet.
