I prayed when I moved down here that we'd have a snowy winter, so y'all can blame me. I love personally how it's still coming down like crazy and yet my neighbors are all clearing off their cars and trying to head out. Gotta get to the mall!

Does anybody know how snowfall is measured?

It must not be as simple as sticking a ruler in it because the "official" number is always considerably lower than the apparent number of inches.

Don't tell me to Google it...I gotta go!

The National Weather Service (i.e. one location next to the Dulles Airport) have all kinds of cool weather instruments that measure everything from lightning strikes to wind speed. They also calculate the snowfall using one of these instruments. There are a few weather stations in the area.. I think the official numbers come from these stations but yes, the inches can vary greatly depending on the location where the snow accumulation is measured.

WOO HOO! I'm thinking 18.5 inches now. It's been snowing very heavily. Some of these drifts are crazy deep! Even if and when they do start to plow some of the streets I'm just picturing the wind blowing it all back in! LOL!

Too bad we don't live closer. I'd rescue you! I shoveled out my car and five of my neighbors last night, and I'm planning to walk over a mile later to shovel out my co-worker's VW Beetle as well. You're just a tad too far to walk for me, though, and they still haven't started to plow yet. I'll be headed out the door for work in about 20 hours---when is Obama going to give me a snow day?!
