yes, yes, and yes - it made me crazy this year when I wanted our son to go to an elementary school just outside our boundary line (the "school of residence" was taking in students from a rougher school that had closed).

So I did open enrollment, got his name on a long list and then haunted (gently) the school office late summer-he got into the PM kinder and 2 days later a spot opened up in K-1 (crowded but much better) - gracious I remember when it was so simple!

The standing in line is nuts - I still don't quite understand it - people camp out overnight and their kids are already going there. The two high ranked elementary schools do not participate in open enrollment.

Now to find a house

Like everything in Fairfax county schools, it all depends on the principal. Some principals will try to accommodate parents when they want a specific teacher and some won't. It's called ''site based management'' which means the principals decide everything that happens in their little fiefdom.

Update: we moved to Falls Church and our son is at Haycock Elementary. The teacher is a great fit for him - very experienced, enthusiastic and yet firm. He is enjoying it. He has yet to make a good friend but he is socializing. The moving fan left the day before the "first" of the big snowstorms hit in late Jan. What a crazy time! My husband was the one who really had to slog through it all as school was closed for several days. Now Spring is here and we're loving it. Thank you to everyone for all of the great advice.
