Coming from Boise, ID to Manassas, VA - I have a pretty good guess what company your husband works for (assuming he's transferring within the same company).

The devlopment in Gainesville and Bristow is disgusting, and an undesirable place to live in my opinion. The schools are good, but it is just one huge neighborhood with almost zero planning for roads and traffic.

A different option is the Warrenton area. You can find a house with property if you want west of the city, and of course there are the cookie cutter neighborhoods but on a smaller scale than the Bristow area. Living in Warrenton will add 10-20 minutes to the commute. Also, there are some decent areas in Manassas, only a couple of miles south of Micron with basically zero traffic. Going down towards Dumfries is worth a look as well.

Yep, you got it! We are transferring with Micron. Thanks for the advice, we looking forward to moving but I hear so many different opinions about the area and after posting here, I am starting to wonder if our realtor really knows what we are looking for.... But thank you, I will mention Warrenton to my husband and we will continue to do our research!

Yuck.
Stop contributing to the destruction of the Piedmont.

Tberg, Why are you being rude to people who are moving to Virginia? Trying to terrorize them before they get there?

Why don't you get off your self-righteous soap box & go complain to PW County and the builders -- they are the ones profiting from all the new homes - and quit your whining. Not your place to tell people Where/What to buy.

Fab everyone isn't so rude here...don't worry. And as for being "foreign" --- This is a multicultural area, you will be just fine. Just prepare yourself for the traffic....

Renting first is a great idea... I live in PW also... I would not suggest Dumfries. Too far and too much congestion going through Manassas. I would look at Haymarket and there are also some older sections in Gainesville worth a look.

Haymarket is close to everything, shopping cinema, 66, 29, etc. Gainesville too. But like I said, be prepared for traffic and the congestion...

Dorothy, thank you so much for your input, we have decided to rent so we don't make a mistake and buy something we will regret later. I appreciate your positive input! Thank you.

I was thinking north of Dumfries on 234 (aka Dumfries Rd), which I guess is still Manassas, but zip code 20112. I don't think traffic on 234 is bad at all coming north towards 66, and Micron is right off 234.

We just transfered from VA (hubby works for a Micron vendor) to Utah last fall. I lived in both Manassas and Bealeton (south down 28) and know people that own in Bristow and Nokesville. Nokesville has a very small town feel with a close knit community, lots of farmland but close enough to Gainsville and Manassas to have shopping close by, they also have fantastic schools. Just know, no matter where you live the traffic will be horrible! My Bristow buddy, who also commutes to Micron (and lives in Braemar), says that the Bristow commute isn't so bad now that they finished some cut-throughs and re-routes on roads. I would personally recommend either Bristow or Nokesville (or, yes, Warrenton, small but growing with a pretty historic area) because Gainesville and Manassas are really congested.

Don't go to Dumfries, I commuted there from Manassas for a year and you will be caught in traffic the whole way (it flows from Dumfries to Manassas in the morning and the opposite way in the evening on 234 and dumps you off right at the turn to reach Micron so you have to dart across 3 lanes to turn, although you can avoid that by turning off 234 onto Clover Leaf Road and cutting through the neighborhood), at least with Nokesville there are cut -arounds by the VRE train station that can help you avoid 28 traffic almost completely. (I know this personally, that is how hubby and I both got from our house Bealeton to our jobs in Manassas for 2 years, drive 28 to Nokesville then take the back roads.)

Try this web site for assistance in finding a place (it's free, no registration required and it's powered by the area MLS, a real estate agent told me about it), it has rentals and sales, although you may get a better rental deal through the paper.
