I traveled from Winchester, VA to NJ today. Rte 7 West near Winchester/Berryville was completely clear, 340 North (1-lane road) was completely clear as was 70 East, 695 Balto Beltway, and 95 north. I took a shortcut into south Jersey and even the 1-lane road east towards Atlantic City was clear (beautifully scenic though with farms and little towns decked out for the holidays).

However, Winchester in-town had problems -- the main roads around town were decent as well as the police station and city hall. But everything else was rough or sheets of ice.

I've always kind of wondered about this. In NJ, they spring into action quickly with snow removal and I wonder if it's the state, county, township or city that handles the small towns, back roads, etc. If I recall, I think that some townships will contract with alot of local gas station-owners who have snowplows attached to the front of their trucks. Just seemed like when I was a kid growing up in NJ that there was an abundance of different types of snow removal vehicles.

But this storm . . . there's actually a giant bulldoze thing on the street in front of my house lifting snow and dumping it into an empty lot. Alot of sideroads are still impassable.

No side street ANYWHERE is lookin' as sharp as mine...if I do say so myself!

I'm out about 14 hours of my time and 35 gallons of diesel fuel, but the neighbors LOVE me!

Maybe they'll erect a bronze statue of me when I'm gone....or rename the street in my honor. Mmmm, Car54 Lane has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

Western Loudoun is great, even the dirt roads have been plowed and sanded. I have enough sand on my little court to have my own beach!

Town of Vienna is horrible, and I'm surprised to say that. It has had such a great reputation for quick snowplowing, but I've barely even seen a plow during this storm. No sign of salt anywhere. As of 8 pm yesterday, the roads still had a significant amount of snow on them, even relatively major roads. Maple Ave was ok by yesterday but on Sunday at noon was still snow-covered. What's up with Vienna? I've driven through several jurisdictions this weekend (into DC on Sunday, to Reston yesterday), and in every case, the roads get noticeably worse as soon as you enter Vienna.

In Oakton the main roads like 123 are just fine. The right turning lane at Lee Highway and Blake is out. In my neighborhood it sucks the streets are still covered in snow. I sput out the other night and got stuck in a snow bank two blocks from my apt. It was late and I just left it there after spending half an hour trying to get it out. I got back to it yesterday morning and just went back and forth over and over again and managed to get it out. So now I know to go slow in my neighborhood like 5 mph.

It's Tuesday morning. My neighborhood in Burke still hasn't seen a plow. The roads are drivable, but still snow covered. There are lots of cars that are still completely snowed in.

I was able to drive from my house to Tysons with relative ease yesterday. The off ramp from 495 onto Braddock Road is a disaster. But other than that, the main roads were all clear.

Same thing here in W. Springfield. No plow yet. But, with a combination of a lot of people shoveling since Saturday and a borrowed snow blower, we have been able to make it so that most could get out with a 4x4. My car would probably go down the hill, but would not make it back up to the house.

An extra benefit... we'll bring the beach to Nova yet!

As a very recent California transplant, I am pleasantly surprised by how quickly we can all get back on the road. My impression was that we'd be cozily snowed in for days and days. Kind of disappointed I wasn't, really

Tysons Corner is all clear, took 48 hours but I'm not complaining. Kudos to everyone who has to go out and shovel this stuff, even from the inside of a snowplow. I wouldn't want to do it!

The only trouble I have was that we have a somewhat steep driveway coming out of our garage, and we could barely get up it yesterday due to the ice patches. I almost slid back into another car, scary And there were many cars on Sunday stuck in both driveways, which would have prevented us from getting out anyway. I don't know why they even tried, even a naive person like me could tell it was no-go when there's snow up to the door handles!
