Another classic place to visit is Mount Vernon. Try to go during one of their festivals or for Washington's birthday. Sometimes they throw in a free ride on the ship. It goes down the Potomac for about 45 minutes, and it's a very pleasant way to see the river (and to look back on Mt. Vernon) on a pretty day.

I didn't know that about the ship. I've taken the family on Washington's birthday and ventured down to the dock, but the highlight was the kids could pick turnips in the fields!

Anyone been to Meadowlark Garden in the last few days? Do they have anything in bloom yet?

It's still a little early to see much, but the garden by the gatehouse has a fair number of flowers in bloom. Be careful on the outer trails, however. A lot of trees fell over in the blizzard.

Another classic Virginia thing to do is the various county fairs. Loudoun Fair starts today and runs all week. Rodeos, demolition derbies, plus traditional fair events like pie eating contests. You know it's really summer when you watch local politicians compete for the honor of kissing a pig...

Too hot for the fair this year. But the wineries sound appealing.

Another classic thing to do here: The Loudoun Summer Music Fest. They always put together an interesting collection of bands, the site is easy to get to and a very mellow place to hang out, and the price is right!

Live Music, Live Bands, Concerts, Music, Festival, The New Loudoun Summer Music Fest - Welcome!

Bumping for the poster who was looking for ideas of things to do in October. A lot of these events are in the fall, and would be great things to do.
